38 year old healthy female patient with no systemic factors, diagnosed as left eye Valsalva Retinopathy with pre retinal hemorrhage at macula. Nd Yag Laser Hyaloidotomy was done
Valsalva Retinopathy
It is a pre retinal hemorrhage caused by sudden increase in intrathoracic or intraabdominal pressure .
Seen in otherwise healthy eye
Causes :
Occurs after an increase in intrathoracic or intraabdominal pressure due to activities such as
- Coughing
- Vomiting
- Lifting heavy weights
- Strenuous exertion
- Straining for bowel movement
- Blowing musical instruments
Symptoms: sudden painless loss of vision
Treatment:
- Observation
- Nd Yag laser hyaloidotomy
- If not resolved with laser , pars plans vitrectomy with removal of blood is an option
